India has been in a lock-down situation for the past 28 days, and the lock down continues till May 3rd, and in some states till May 7th. Since Feb, when the first Covid-19 case was reported, the count crossed 17,000 cases as of today (March 14th). For a country with 1.3 billion people, and inadequate medical facilities, it is an impressive performance so far.
However, the key question is that "can India sustain a lock-down successfully till May 3rd?" Is it an economic, social or even a humanitarian crisis?
Today, millions of Indians migrated from other states to metro cities such as Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore are stranded and amid Covid-19 crisis. Most of them are in informal employment as workers in factories and construction sites. The lock down has pushed some them to margins.
However, if the pandemic continues unabated for another couple of months, it possible to keep the poor in lock down? State and Central governments are doing their best to ensure that adequate food is available for these people. But will it reach a point where death because of hunger exceeds death because of disease?"
However, the recent attack on police, doctors and volunteers, isn't an early indication that the rural India is turning restless?
So far, India held up very well and I hope that we tide through this?
