Post COVID-19: Future of work

TCS recently announced 25-25 model or "Secured Border Less Workplace", under which only 25% of their staff will work from office by 2025. It is another five years away but CXOs are fast pivoting their operating model with work-from-home (WFH).

Talent and state-of-the-art infrastructure are the two big value drivers for ITES companies.

If infrastructure goes the digital way, real estate cost savings are an immediate benefit. However, are there other considerations beyond cost savings that are keeping CXOs awake? How infra, branding, leadership and engagement with stakeholders should change to keep pace with the ever changing "new normal"?

Below are 10 questions in this context.

1. Do ITES companies' operating models look like Amazon or Uber with a compelling digital platform supplemented by fulfilment centres?

2. Does this mean they have to maintain an omni-channel infrastructure with an optimal mix of office space, co-working space, and a home-office?

3. Will "best places to work for" be replaced with "best platforms to associate with"?

4. How employers' engagement with their associates will transform? Will corporate intranets look like Facebook or Instagram social networks?

5. How managers' engagement with their teams will change? Will "screen presence" replace smoking and cocktail diplomacy?

6. How does an employer and employee commercial relationships change? Do employers prefer a 25% permanent staff and 75% contractors / free-lancers?

7. How does security surveillance and management happen? Will online-live or algorithmic proctoring become a new normal? Will security guards become digital proctors?

8. How leaders could rally their teams? Will they have to gain a digital super hero status?

Finally, if "players" become "platforms" then two more questions.

9. Will big boys become even bigger, and smaller ones settle as affiliates?

10. Will 'cash rich' ITES companies become 'cash burning' ITES-commerce players?
